Our ultimate guide for saving money shopping online will help you save big bucks doing your holiday shopping and even earn money while doing your regular shopping. We’ve used these in our personal lives and have enjoyed the savings that it has brought to our bank account!
It Pays to be a Newb
Create a secondary email address that you only use for shopping. This way you don’t get your regular inbox bombarded with tons of emails. Plus now you can enter it in for discounts offered only to new customers.
Play the Abandon Game
Abandon a full shopping cart on a retail website, and you may get an email the next day offering you a discount to complete the purchase.
Shop Discount Deals
Sites like Groupon have amazing offers from excursions, to products, to even local discounts to restaurants and spas. You can get amazing value for your dollar when you shop at sites like this.
Leverage Your Internet Browser
Invisible-Hand is a browser extension that I recently came across. It runs in the background and tracks prices online stores (they’re currently in beta testing at the publication of this post and working on adding airlines as well); then it notifies you about whether an item you’re viewing is cheaper elsewhere. The best thing, other than saving money, is that it doesn’t track any of your personal data!
More Browser Extensions
Ever heard of Honey? It’s another browser extension that searches coupons and automatically enters them for you at checkout when you’re shopping at one of their participating stores. This extension does collect data but it doesn’t sell it.
Gift Cards Below Market Value
Raise and CardCash are sites where you can purchase gift cards for below market value. The sites list cards, either unused or with remaining funds, from consumers that can be purchased at a discount. Buy a $50 gift card at a 10% discount and then purchase a Christmas gift with your newly acquired card. Boom! Savings!
Earn Money While Shopping
You have to shop anyway right? You may as well earn money while doing your regular shopping! Sites like Shopkick or Ebates allow you to do just that. Create an account on one of the sites, then click through to participating stores to earn money while shopping.
Say Hello to Instant Messenger
If you’re shopping online and the site has an instant messenger service, use it to ask for a lower price. Tell them you like the product but that it’s just a little pricey for you. Ask whether there are any promotions or discounts that might make it more affordable. Never hurts to ask, the worst they can say is no
Pick up in-store
This option is overlooked by far too many people. Just drive to the closest store to you after work to pick up your package and save money on shipping.
Free Shipping Day
On Dec. 15, many stores (467 so far) are expected to offer shipping deals with no minimum order threshold. Go to freeshippingday.com to get codes to enter at checkout.
Free 2-Day Shipping
Being a member of Amazon Prime can give you some great benefits. If you aren’t already a member you can sign up for a 30-day free trial just for the holiday season to get free two-day shipping. But Amazon will automatically charge you for the service at the end of the trial period, so remember to cancel if you don’t plan to keep the membership.
